Update on the Garands and M1 Carbines From South Korea

I was contacted by someone from the ODCMP. It turns out the reason the USA will not allow South Korea to sell the M1 Garands and Carbines is that the US government already owns them.  This has been going on for 5 years. The USA handed the rifles to South Korea through a lend-lease program. As such, they can not be sold. They can only be returned to the US government (which would then give them to the ODCMP to sell).

That’s what I THOUGHT ought to be the case. US Govt, (taxpayers) loaned these out to fight commies. If they don’t need them anymore, they ought to be returned. Surplus rifles go to the CMP. For sale to interested taxpayers with the funds going to the instruction of marksmanship via the CMP.

Be nice to ask the Chinese to return any they happened to pick up or liberate from Chaing Kai Cheks people as well.

There exists a mechanism whereby the U.S. can change the status of the lend/lease and thereby allow the Koreans (and others that have similar caches of M-1 and other firearms) to sell them, providing the cash generated is used to purchase other U.S. made military equipment. This has worked in the past, but good luck in getting the present State Department to approve the change of status. I have personally recommended to another military that is in the same situation to just sit on their stock until the present administration changes.
